Dance Discovery

Dance Discovery is a performance troupe, but it occasionally holds public dances. Here is a YouTube video of the Inaugural Ball sponsored by Dance Discovery on January 20, 2009, and here's a handy Dance Discovery brochure.

Here is a wonderful movie of Dance Discovery performing Les Quatre Berceaux (The Four Cradles) during the Treasures of Napoleon exhibit at the Missouri History Museum in December of 2010. Members of the troupe reconstructed the late-18th-century dance from diagrams and instructions written in French.

The St Louis English Country Dancers

The St Louis English County Dancers hold bi-monthly dances - second Fridays at the Brentwood Congregational Church and fourth Mondays at Focal Point. Here's a flyer. In November of 2011, Gary Roodman will be coming for a Workshop at 3pm and Ball at 8pm on Saturday, November 12th, 2011. More information is on their web site.

Kimberly Hall and the Jovial BeggarsJovial Beggars

The Jovial Beggars hold occasional dances in Salem or Rolla, MO. In the picture to the right, Kimberly Hall prompts the dances for the "English Country Dancing in Hats" Ball. Most of the dancers are high school age, some younger, some older. There are 60- 90 people who attend these dances, which often feature music from the Hibernia Station band from Jefferson City, MO.

Highland Mist Scottish Country Dancers

Scottish dancing is a close relative of the Anglo-American set dance experience. The local group is the Highland Mist Scottish Country Dancers.

Columbia MO

The folks in Columbia, Missouri are starting a new Engish dance, with backing from John Shewmaker and Jim Thaxter. The picture at the left is from their dance in February of 2009, showing the Uncanny Musicians band.

Champaign-Urbana IL

Jonathan Sivier has shepherded the thriving Central Illinois English Country Dance for years. Here's their schedule.

They hold special dances twice a year, a Christmas Ball in December and a Playford Ball in June.

A special English/American weekend, Marchfest, is being held March 18-20, 2011, featuring contra dance music on Friday from Chicory (Martha Edwards, Ben Schreiber, Michael Shapiro, Mike Brown) and English Country Dance music on Saturday from Ragged Robin (Martha Edwards, Ben Schreiber, Billy Boyer).

Fairfield IA

Fairfield English Dance is a long-established dance which meets in a wonderful hall in quaint downtown Fairfield most Friday nights. They bring Bare Necessities there twice a year.

Lawrence, KS

This friendly dance meets at the Camelot II Ballroom in Lawrence, Kansas, fourth Sundays. Write Jill Allen or Jerome Grisanti for more information.

Chicago IL

English Country dancers meet at Fermilab once a month for dances. They are holding a New Year's Ball Weekend, jointly sponsored with the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society on January 15-16, 2011, with Earl Gaddis and Karen Axelrod playing the music. Nashville, TN

The Nashville Country Dancers has weekly English dance workshops on Monday nights and a monthly dance on second Sundays. Their annual Playford Ball will be on March 25-27, 2011 and will feature the band Goldcrest (Daron Douglas on fiddle, Paul Oorts on mandolin, Dave Wiesler on piano) and the caller Gene Murrow.

The Scissortail Traditional Dance Society of Oklahoma City presents the 4th annual Set For Spring English Country Dance Weekend in Oklahoma City, OK, on March 11-13, 2011 with the band Childgrove (Martha Stokely on oboe, pennywhistle and recorder, Debbie Jackson on piano, Anne Ogren on violin and viola) and caller Sharon Green.

The Set for Spring dance weekend rotates among Austin, TX, Dallas TX, and Oklahoma City, OK.
